The Veil (Devil’s Isle #1) by Chloe Neill

The VeilSynopsis:

Seven years ago, the Veil that separates humanity from what lies beyond was torn apart, and New Orleans was engulfed in a supernatural war. Now, those with paranormal powers have been confined in a walled community that humans call the District. Those who live there call it Devil’s Isle.

Claire Connolly is a good girl with a dangerous secret: she’s a Sensitive, a human endowed with magic that seeped through the Veil. Claire knows that revealing her skills would mean being confined to Devil’s Isle. Unfortunately, hiding her power has left her untrained and unfocused.

Liam Quinn knows from experience that magic makes monsters of the weak, and he has no time for a Sensitive with no control of her own strength. But when he sees Claire using her powers to save a human under attack—in full view of the French Quarter—Liam decides to bring her to Devil’s Isle and the teacher she needs, even though getting her out of his way isn’t the same as keeping her out of his head.

But when the Veil threatens to shatter completely, Claire and Liam must work together to stop it, or else New Orleans will burn…

My thoughts:

I saw this title on Netgalley and thought it sounded interesting. So interesting that I requested it even though I was planning not to request any more books from there for a while.

But I was super happy that I did. I really enjoyed this book. It is a great book and a great start to a new series. Great interdiction to the world and characters.

The first chapter seemed pretty busy, a little overload of information. Most of the back-story was explained in the first chapter, I was a little worried that the whole book would be that busy but it was not. Well it was busy and a lot of things happen but not a overload if information.

I love all the characters, main and side characters, it is hard not to like them. They smart, funny, brave but not o much that it would seem fake or forced.  Claire is great she just deals with everything do good and is super loyal to the people close to her. Though sometimes I thought she was a bit too trusting and she should be a little more careful, who to trust. But she seems to see the good in everyone.

I really enjoyed Liam as well, even though I was not sure about him in the beginning. He is a great guy.

While there is defiantly, some chemistry and they seem to be likening each other; it does not take over the book and the actual story. All seems pretty slow and natural.

I really enjoyed the concept of the book and it is well written. While I would have liked for Claire to have a different kind of power (in my personal opinion), I really loved it.

The book has some pretty good twists in it and surprises, it is suspenseful and keeps you guessing. Has some humor and action in it.

I cannot wait for the second book to come out, I fir sure will continue this series.

I rate it at 4 ★
