Drafted into working for the Order of Merciful Aid, mercenary Kate Daniels has more paranormal problems than she knows what to do with these days. And in Atlanta, where magic comes and goes like the tide, that’s saying a lot.
But when Kate’s werewolf friend Derek is discovered nearly dead, she must confront her greatest challenge yet. As her investigation leads her to the Midnight Games—an invitation only, no holds barred, ultimate preternatural fighting tournament—she and Curran, the Lord of the Beasts, uncover a dark plot that may forever alter the face of Atlanta’s shapeshifting community…
Why oh why have I not picked up this series earlier??? Oh well, now I have and I’m hooked, these books are absolutely amazing.
In this book we learn a lot more about Kate, her past and her magic. She actually uses some of it to safe her friends even if that means she exposes to who she really is. I love Kate she is smart, brave funny, cocky but not much and stands her ground. She will do anything for the people close to her even if that means sacrificing herself. She means well and wants to help everyone , but often makes a bigger mess out if it, but in the end it all works out , mostly.
This time Derrek, one of my favorite characters in the series is in big trouble and I was not sure if he was going to make it through the book. Kate of course wants to help and so does most of the pack, but the big thing is no one is telling Curran what is happening and a lot of members in his pack are going against pack law. Not good, not only have they to be worried about fighting the enemy but also have to be worried about Curran finding them.
Again this book is filled with tons of action suspense, humor and the sexual tension between Kate and Curran is at its all-time high. Add to that the midnight games; the gladiator style games in the book were just great.
I really enjoy Curran, we learn some more about him and it seems to be clearer that Kate is more than a game to him.
Another couple is in the making and I really enjoy the side story of Raphael and Andrea. So sweet and fun to read.
We also get to see a different side of Saiman, I’m really not sure yet what to think of him, I kind of like him in his creepy way.
I can’t wait to read and learn more about Roland but I’m sacred that when it happens we will lose some major players.
All in all I loved this book and can’t wait to start the next one. I rate it at 5 ★
Some of my favorite quotes:
“Every time I think you’ve reached the limits of arrogance, you show me new heights. Truly, your egotism is like the Universe—ever expanding.”
“…you expect me to fall on my back with my legs spread.”
“Not necessarily. … You can fall on your hands and knees if you prefer. Or against the wall. Or on the kitchen counter. I suppose I might let you be on top, if you make it worth my while.”
“I think you’re confused as to the nature of our relationship. You and I, we don’t get along. You’re a psychopathic control freak. You order me around and I want to kill you. I’m a pigheaded insubordinate ass. I drive you mad and you want to strangle me.”
“Once! I did it once!”
“Your date appears to be hysterical,” Rene told me.
“You think I should slap some man into him?”
