Atlanta would be a nice place to live, if it weren’t for the magic. When the magic is up, rogue mages cast their spells and monsters appear, while guns refuse to fire and cars fail to start. But then technology returns, and the magic recedes as unpredictably as it arose.
Kate Daniels works for the Order of Knights of Merciful Aid, officially as a liaison with the mercenary guild. Unofficially, she cleans up the paranormal problems no one else wants to handle – especially if they involve Atlanta’s shapeshifting community. When she’s called in to investigate a fight at the Steel Horse, a bar on the border between the territories of the shapeshifters and the necromancers, Kate quickly discovers that there’s a new player in town. One who’s been around for thousands of years – and who rode to war at the side of Kate’s father. This foe may be too much even for Kate and Curran, the Beast Lord, to handle. Because this time Kate will be taking on family.
First if WOW, what a ride. Okay now that I got that out of my system I can try to write this review. For some reason I always have trouble writing reviews for this series, which is odd since I love so much, you would think it be easier to write it but no.
This book was a pure roller coaster ride of emotions. Kate barley gets any time or room to breathe and is in constant action and danger. She meets someone in from her family and it is not a nice reunion at all, but we all figured that out already. A lot of things happen in this book, lots of action again and maybe the biggest death rate in the series so far and most of them on the good site. Kate mussed deal with her past since it seems to be catching up with her and she starts to trust some people about who she really is. There were moments I felt really sad for her as she recalls her childhood and how she has been raised and I see why she does not want people close to her. But she made some great friends and they are not about to give up on her and will fight alongside with her.
We have Curran who will stand by her as long as he breaths, we see how serious he is about her and even when he find out who she is, will not back away. We get some pretty tender senses between them two ad it was nice to see them happy ,even if it only last a little while between the war she is fighting. But of course we get a lot of humor with those two as well. I swear, there were parts in the book that I had tears in my eyes from laughing so hard about the things they said or done to each other. There were some pretty steamy scenes as well as some parts where it was not sure if they will get their HEA . Some had to do with the pack, since some clans are clearly not a fan of Kate being his “Mate” and I think that they will have to deal with that for a while. Some things happened that might have changed Curran and his view on the pack forever towards the end.
While we don’t get to see much of Derrek or Julie, but it is very clear how much they mean to her and play a pretty big part of her journey at least Julie, Derrek I think will stand behind Kate no matter what happens.
We get a little more of Aunt B and she makes Kate a very important and useful offer for a deal but I’m not convinced yet that she is the “good” guy , just yet .
Andrea and Raphael are having some problems in the relationship as well and I hope it will all work out for them. I really like both of them.
Well I wasn’t sure about Saiman in the last book but not I’m sure I really don’t like him. He is a total sleazeball.
I also enjoy Jim and Doolittle, they both great to Kate and know how to handle her.
Overall this was another great book in the series and I loved it. Fast-paced, action, humor , romance and some gore all in one great book .
I can/t wait to start the next book to see what trouble Kate gets into next and how they pack will handle her. I really hope the pack thing will not drag on forever.
I rate the book a full 5 ★
Some of my favorite quotes:
“Just wait until he figures out I shut him out of his slut hut.”
“If you come, you better come in force because I will kill every single one of you. My hand won’t shake, my aim won’t falter. My face will be the last thing you’ll see before you die.” I jammed my knife into the table and walked out.”
“When I’m with him, I can feel myself getting better. It’s like he’s picking up broken pieces of me and putting me back together, and I don’t even know he’s doing it. We never talk about it. We don’t go to therapy. He just loves me and that’s enough.”
“You replaced me with a shaved poodle?”
“He’s got mad skills.”
Derek’s eyebrows crept up.
“He can vomit and urinate at the same time and he doesn’t make fun of my car.”
