With twelve hellhounds after her, pregnant Charley Davidson takes refuge at the only place she thinks they can’t get to her: the grounds of an abandoned convent. But after months of being cooped up there, Charley is ready to pop. Both metaphorically and literally since she is now roughly the size of a beached whale. Fortunately, a new case has captured her attention, one that involves a murder on the very grounds the team has taken shelter upon. A decades-old murder of the newly-vowed nun she keeps seeing in the shadows is almost enough to pull her out of her doldrums.
Charley’s been forbidden to step foot off the sacred grounds. While the angry hellhounds can’t traverse the consecrated soil, they can lurk just beyond its borders. They have the entire team on edge, especially Reyes. And if Charley didn’t know better, she would swear Reyes is getting sick. He grows hotter with every moment that passes, his heat scorching across her skin every time he’s near, but naturally he swears he’s fine.
While the team searches for clues on the Twelve, Charley just wants answers and is powerless to get them. But the mass of friends they’ve accrued helps. They convince her even more that everyone in her recent life has somehow been drawn to her, as though they were a part of a bigger picture all along. But the good feelings don’t last for long because Charley is about to get the surprise of her crazy, mixed-up, supernatural life….
First I like to thank Yodamom for getting me hooked on these books. You are truly an evil genius when it comes to recommending books to me.
Right after finishing the book, all I could think is OMG!! OMG!! OMG!! I’m a little calmer now and hope I get all my thought into this review. Of course I will keep it spoiler free.
This book starts 8 months after the last one and Charley is heavily pregnant. Which for me was great, I was wondering if we have to wait 5 more books for Beep to arrive. Since all the storylines in the previous books were only days or weeks gone by. Because of the twelve hunting them down, Charley, Reyes and the gang are stuck at an old convent on sacred grounds. Well at least Charley and Reyes, the rest come and come. But we see them all. Some people or departed even moved with them.
Charley, to me was a bit annoying this book but that could have been that she can’t go anywhere. She was still working cases though; being stuck in one place didn’t stop her one bit. But like I said she annoyed me a little bit, with her constant “oh my husband is so hot.” “how can he be with me” And so on… yeah after 7 books , we get it Reyes is hot. She doesn’t need to tell us that every 5 pages. Later she did a few things, that I and everyone in the book just thought was stupid. Really?? Why take such big risks that far into it. I know that what Charley is all about but I would have thought now that is with Beep that might change a bit. Knowing what she is risking.
Reyes, in this book was a little different as well and I couldn’t put my finger on it but it all made sense towards the end, to a point. They are still keeping secrets from each other which I thought was a bit much. Some I could understand, some I could not. Since I don’t want to spoil it, I cannot go further into that without giving some of the storyline away so I just leave it at that.
Like I said we get to see everyone in the book, some more some less. But I would have thought we see more of Garrett. While he is plenty in the book it just didn’t seem like it.
I loved Cookie and Ubie, though Ube seemed to be of the pages a lot this book as well. We also get Amber and Quentin quite a bit J . It is further hinted that there is more to her and that she might or might not be clairvoyant.
Gemma and Denise are there as well with and for Charley. Though I can’t say I liked Denise a bit more now, I never felt sorry for her. I don’t think there was any excuse to why she treated that way as a child at all.
Osh, I really like his character more and more. We learn so much from him and he seems to be on her site and tells her a lot more than Reyes is. I have a feeling there is a big story arc about him to come.
Now to the overall storyline….. we or I have been waiting for answers from book 1 for so many things. And every time we got one, we just had more questions. But this book gives us A LOT of answers, if not most of them.
While I was hoping for some, I didn’t really expect to get them ALL at once. It seemed like 7 books worth of questions were answered in the last 4-5 chapters in this book. It was a bit much; I thought my head will explode form all the information overload that was thrown at us. Who or what is Mr. Wong, Who and what Charley is… her true powers and name. Beep…. And of course Lucifer and so much more. Of course with that came also some pretty shocking twists, some I never saw coming.
This was truly another roller coaster ride of emotion and plot twists of a book. While I felt a little annoyed at Charley sometimes in the book, at the end I felt so bad for her and it was truly heartbreaking.
We get plenty of action, even with them stuck in one place, lots of humor but also some things that shattered my stone cold heart into tiny pieces, maybe because I’m a mom and could never imagine.
Of course like I said before we get some pretty shocking plot twists thrown at us.
It will be pretty interesting to see what happens next and how will they all handle it. I can’t believe I will have to wait until 2016 to wait not sure I will survive.
Now to the rating, I had a hard time to rate it , while I LOVED the book I can’t give it full 5★ , because of Charley telling me for the millionth time how damn hot Reyes is. It got kind of old, also while I loved getting answers I thought it was way too much all at once and over the course of few chapters. So I think I will rate this at 4 ½ ★ for me.
